Peaceful riverside walks and historic grounds designed for leisurely exploration
What Awaits You
Each path offers something unique for your pace and interests
Walk through centuries-old stonework surrounded by seasonal blooms. These quiet spaces offer shaded benches and fascinating plant collections that change with the seasons. It's where you can spend an hour or just fifteen minutes — whatever suits you.
The Blackwater River trails are gentle and mostly flat. You'll find rest spots every few hundred metres with views across the water. We've walked them ourselves — they're genuinely peaceful without feeling isolated.
We've mapped out the best benches and gazebos throughout the estate. These aren't hidden — they're placed where the views are actually worth stopping for. Bring a book, bring binoculars, or just sit and watch the day change.
Why People Return
Some days you'll walk for an hour. Other days you'll sit on the same bench for forty minutes. That's exactly how it should be. There's no schedule, no group pace to match, no guilt about turning back early.
We've tested every path for manageable gradients and solid footing. Walkers use different aids — sticks, walking frames, nothing at all — and everyone finds their rhythm here. The terrain's been chosen carefully over decades.
You won't feel crowded. The grounds are large enough that you'll have stretches entirely to yourself. Yet you're never truly isolated — there's always a keeper's cottage or another walker within reasonable distance if you need something.
Spring brings the walled garden alive with blooms. Summer offers long light evenings. Autumn's the walking season — crisp mornings, fewer midges. Winter's quietest, with bare trees showing views you'd otherwise miss. Every visit's different.

Answers to what visitors ask most
Yes. The grounds stay open all year. Winter's actually lovely if you're dressed warmly — fewer people, clearer views. We do close paths temporarily after heavy storms if there's debris or wet ground. Check ahead if weather's been rough.
Dogs on leads are welcome. We've got water stations for them near the main pathways. Some areas near the river are restricted during nesting season (April-June) to protect wildlife. Staff can point you toward dog-friendly routes when you arrive.
There's accessible parking close to the walled gardens entrance. Standard parking's about a 5-minute walk away. If you've got mobility concerns, ring ahead and we can arrange closer drop-off. The pathways themselves are designed to be manageable from wherever you park.
Early morning light's golden around 7-8am in summer, later in winter. The walled gardens photograph beautifully in late spring when everything's blooming. Riverside walks are stunning at sunset. Bring a tripod if you want — many visitors do landscape photography here.
We offer guided walks twice monthly — one focused on plants and gardens, one on local history. They're free for regular visitors. You can also hire a private guide if you've got a group. Get in touch to book or for custom arrangements.
Wear comfortable shoes with decent grip — some paths get wet. Bring water, especially in warm months. A hat and sunscreen aren't optional in summer. Binoculars if you're into birdwatching. A notebook if you want to track plants you see. Really, just dress for the weather and you'll be fine.
