The Person Behind the Research

Mairead grew up in Dungarvan, just eight kilometres from Lismore, where she developed an early fascination with the castle grounds and their architectural heritage. That childhood curiosity never left her — it's shaped everything she's done since.

She completed her degree in Horticulture at University College Dublin in 2008, then spent five years working with the Irish Heritage Gardens Trust. During those years, she surveyed and documented walled gardens across Munster, getting her hands dirty while learning the real stories behind these spaces. But it was her 2013 publication, Waterford's Hidden Gardens: A Restoration Guide , that changed her trajectory. The book became essential reading for estate managers throughout the southeast — and it still is.

Over the past decade, her focus shifted. She started asking different questions: How do historic estates serve people in their later years? What makes a pathway genuinely safe and accessible without erasing its character? This led her to work directly with property managers, implementing navigable pathways that honor period authenticity while meeting modern accessibility standards. It's not just about preservation — it's about making these spaces liveable.

At roseslumiere Limited, she's dedicated to creating content that helps retirees understand what a historic riverside property actually offers. Not the romance of it, though there's plenty of that. The practical reality of daily life in places like Lismore.

How She Works

Mairead's approach combines two things that don't always sit comfortably together: rigorous historical research and genuine empathy for practical mobility needs.

She doesn't believe heritage has to be locked away. A walled garden isn't more authentic because it's difficult to access. A riverside path isn't more historic because someone can't safely walk it. Instead, she asks: How do we honor what came before while making these spaces liveable for people right now?

This means getting specific. Not "improve accessibility" but "install benches every 80 metres so people can rest." Not "preserve the original surface" but "which original surface, from which era — and does that choice work for today?" She spends time on properties, walks the paths in different seasons, talks to residents about what actually works.

Her writing reflects this grounded approach. She won't tell you a property is perfect for retirees just because it has historic charm. She'll tell you exactly what you need to know: the slope of the riverside path, where the trees shade in winter, which routes are genuinely accessible, what time of year the gardens look best. Real information for real decisions.

"A garden isn't truly beautiful if you can't actually walk through it safely. Heritage isn't preserved by keeping people out — it's honoured when it's genuinely lived in."
